| Using data collected from others who have been tested by FamilyTree DNA it is possible to compare test results as well as assumed ethnic origins. When this is teamed up with haplogroup analysis it may be possible to make some assumptions about the ethnic origins of your Y-line ancestor. I compared our results with those published in a research paper titled "Y Chromosome Evidence for Anglo-Saxon Mass Migration". The authors tested men from towns in England, Wales, Norway and The Netherlands. The authors assumed that they would find a gradient of Viking DNA or Anglo-Saxon DNA across the British Isles. What they found was that the samples in England (Midlands and East Anglian) were indistinguisable from the samples from The Netherlands (representing Anglo-Saxon DNA). The interesting find was that the Welsh samples were very different from all of the other samples, including the English samples. The authors used six markers in their research: DYS 19, DYS 388, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392 and DYS393. The highlighted numbers are a rate of the number of hits for a particular person's DNA profile in one of the tested locations. For instance, #8089 has a DNA profile that was found in 13.3% of the men tested in Norway. |
